Mr. Trautwein grew up in Wyoming on a ranch west of Cheyenne. Mr. Trautwein graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Finance Degree in 1974, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He graduated with honors from the University of Wyoming Law School in 1977, where he was a member of the Land and Water Law Review.
Mr. Trautwein practiced law first as an associate and then as a partner in Cheyenne with the firm of Hathaway, Speight, Kunz, Trautwein & Barrett from 1977 to 1995. He has practiced in Fort Collins with the predecessor and the current firm since 1995.
Mr. Trautwein handles health insurance matters, disability matters, plaintiff's cases, banking law, insurance bad faith cases, toxic torts, business fraud, employment law, personal injury as well as commercial and general litigation. Mr. Trautwein handles both noncomplex and complex litigation and has been involved in over 40 jury trials.
Mr. Trautwein is active in the community, having served on the Larimer County Board of Health, various Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce committees, as a director for the Fort Collins Baseball Club and with Project Smile, helping provide dental care to children in Fort Collins.
Mr. Trautwein has been married to Suzanne since 1974. They have two children, Mary, who is a Major in the United States Air Force, and John, who mentors children and produces a film for business and non-profit entities.
